(Brookhaven, GA) — The Second Annual Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival will take place in beautiful Blackburn Park on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. Not only will attendees enjoy the Arts & Crafts Market, Children’s Village, 5K Run presented by Xfinity, Pet World and Pet Parade, there will be musical performances throughout the weekend from some of today’s hottest bands. And admission is FREE.

Here’s a look at just three groups that will hit the stage at the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival: The Whiskey Gentry has a rich, warm sound blending country, rock, folk, Americana and bluegrass that will have you singing along in no time. Paste Magazine says they are a “toe-tapping, steamrolling kind of band, its fingers picking deep into fields of bluegrass…with a punk-inspired kick drum.”

Initially a quintet formed by husband and wife duo Lauren Staley and Jason Morrow, the band’s debut album in 2011 Please Make Welcome became a critically-acclaimed success, launching the Atlanta-based band nationally. They have since expanded, adding Chesley Lowe on banjo, Sammy Griffin on bass, Price Cannon on drums, Michael Smith on mandolin, and Rurik Nunan on fiddle. The Whiskey Gentry’s latest album, Holly Grove, continues winning over new fans.

The spotlight on Nashville, with its musical values and timeless traditions, is currently bright. And no band embodies 21st century Nashville more than the quintet known as Humming House. It’s the way they weave together threads of Music City’s folk, soul, and bluegrass legacies. It’s their inspirational and revealing songwriting. It’s in their acoustic instrumentation, presenting mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and bass in fresh roles. But it’s the soulful and soaring vocals that are the emotional core and lure of Humming House.

The Southern Gothic was started in 2007 by frontman and songwriter S.M. Connor, bringing their unique brand of sunbaked, road-worn country, southern rock & soul to countless stages across the US. When not headlining, they’ve shared stages with artists such as Tim McGraw, Willie Nelson, Big & Rich, Zac Brown Band, Uncle Kracker, Corey Smith, ZZ Top, Heart and more. The diverse nature of the artists with whom they’ve toured reflects the diversity of the band’s sound. “It works,” says Connor in regard to the varying audiences. “We’ve played to country crowds, rock crowds, young crowds, old crowds. The response with all of them has been fantastic.”

Fantastic enough for Billboard Magazine to notice. The Southern Gothic was named “Artist on the Verge” in Billboard’s Best Bets after debuting #1 on its Heat Seekers List. 2013 saw the band’s hit single “Sheets Down” stay on the fan-voted CMT Pure Countdown for four weeks, resulting in 60k views on YouTube. The band recently headed to its new home of Nashville to start work on their 3rd album to be released later this summer.

2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 25, 2015 – The City of Brookhaven on Aug. 25 announced March 26-27, 2016, as the dates for the 2nd annual Cherry Blossom Festival. “This will be an event that families can embrace,” Mayor Rebecca Chase Williams said, noting that the advantages of that particular weekend is that it’s blooming season for the cherry blossoms; there won’t be competing soccer and baseball games, school plays and other events; and that it will not occur over Spring Break when many people leave town.

It will also coincide with the timing of the Cherry Blossom Festival in both Macon and Washington D.C., and takes place over Easter weekend.

The inaugural festival earlier this year drew an estimated 10,000 visitors to Blackburn Park over the three days, helping to infuse as much as $185,000 into the local economy. Some 95 percent of survey respondents rated their festival experience as “good” to “excellent.”

Discover DeKalb will assist with marketing and promoting the festival, and the city will issue a Request for Proposals for an event planner.

“I look forward to an even bigger and better festival next year,” Williams said. “Any money that we spend on it will come from the hotel-motel tax, which can only be used for projects that draw visitors to the city. It will not come from the general fund.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 7, 2015 – When some 10,000 visitors descended on Blackburn Park for Brookhaven’s inaugural Cherry Blossom Festival in March over a three-day period, 95 percent of survey respondents rated their experience as “good” to “excellent,” and city officials say they are pleased the business community stepped up to help fund the celebration.
While the city is dedicating $123,866 from hotel/motel tax funds for the festival, more than 60 businesses contributed $128,192 through sponsorships, vendors and concessions.
“We are proud that the business community stepped up to match dollar for dollar what our tourism funds are accomplishing, even a little more. It was a true public-private partnership, and we consider this a long-term investment,” said Mayor Rebecca Chase Williams, adding that it’s required by law to spend the hotel/motel tax revenue on events that attract visitors to the city.
“We are planning to build on this legacy next year by finding a partner to help produce the festival.”
The city is currently in talks with Discover DeKalb to manage the event next year.
The hotel/motel tax also helps fund other events that draw people to Brookhaven, having helped fund more than $100,000 for events like Soccerfest, the Brookhaven Bolt, Live in the Park, the Brookhaven Arts Festival and the Chili Cook-off. It also funds the city tourism manager’s salary.
The Georgia Municipal Association recently released a case study stating the benefits of the arts and events that bring the arts to the community.
“The results are seen through revitalizing downtowns, attracting entrepreneurs, activating community gathering spaces, changing education and forging a shared identity and strong sense of place,” wrote Karen L. Paty, Georgia Council for the Arts Executive Director, and Lamar North, Georgia Municipal Association Executive Director, in an introduction to the study.
Williams explained that city officials did not expect to make a profit on the Cherry Blossom Festival in its first year, and that they will learn from the experience when planning next year’s.
However, it’s estimated that the festival helped infuse some $70,000 into Brookhaven’s economy with hotel, restaurant and shop visits.
“Still, you can’t put a price on the community-building the Cherry Blossom Festival
accomplished,” she said. “From the dog show to The Coasters and to just the plain fun everyone had, this festival was a gift to the city’s residents, businesses and visitors from the city and across the region.”
The festival also made a splash online. Some 25,097 visitors used the festival website –
www.brookcherryfest.org – with 109,091 page views from 63 countries. On Twitter, 108 tweets used the festival hashtag, reaching more than 300,000 Twitter users.
Visitors to the festival who filled out the survey sheet exclaimed that they had fun and hope to come back next year.
Feedback included:
“Has the potential to grow in popularity and attendance.”
“Great atmosphere!”
“Love it. Would love to come back next year.”
“Amazing event! Will come every year.”
